Do You Know the Mysterious Antioxidant Mechanism of Resveratrol?
The antioxidant mechanism of resveratrol is still being investigated. It does not seem to have a direct affect, like other antioxidants do. Most antioxidants are reducing Anti Aging Process. They reduce free radicals to innate substances. For example, vitamin C reduces hydrogen peroxide to water.
Hydrogen peroxide forms within the cells when superoxide is converted to it by SOD2. SOD2 is a protein bound to a manganese ion. So, manganese, an essential mineral, must be present in the diet, in order for that reaction to occur. The process by which SOD2 forms is complex and has to do with the function of healthy DNA and mitochondria.
It seems that the antioxidant mechanism of resveratrol is to increase the activity of SOD2. One research group reports that there is a fourteen-fold increase in SOD2 activity when resveratrol enters a cell.
It is all very complicated and difficult for even scientists to understand. In a nutshell, it does something that other antioxidants cannot do. But, other antioxidants do things that it cannot. That’s why it is so important to include a variety of different antioxidants in your diet, every day.
Supplementation is a good idea, because the anti-oxidant content of food varies. What you see listed on a nutrition fact sheet is simply an average. Foods are not evaluated on a regular basis, because to evaluate them makes them inedible. The resveratrol-content of a food is not even listed on a fact sheet. So, there is no way to determine if you are getting any or how much you are getting.
Some experts suggest that it is possible to meet our optimal nutritional requirements through diet alone. I, for one, do not have the time to calculate the nutritional content of the foods that I eat every day and since the content varies, it would be wasted effort, anyway.
Due to the antioxidant mechanism of resveratrol it becomes an important dietary nutrient. But, it is not the only important one. Single ingredient supplement sales have risen greatly, because of media attention, but they are not your best choice for supplementation.
If you wanted to take all of the extracts that have received attention lately, you would need to take turmeric, green tea, gingko biloba, olive leaf, black cumin, milk thistle, SAM-e, Rutin and many others. In order to get the antioxidant mechanism of resveratrol and turmeric, you would need to make sure that the supplements had an enteric coating, because those nutrients are quickly degraded by stomach acid.
Then you would still need a daily vitamin and mineral supplement, although it is difficult to find one that contains manganese. That’s not to be confused with magnesium, which is commonly found in dietary supplements. There are very few significant dietary sources of manganese. You would need to eat a cup of pineapple every day to meet your minimum daily requirements. No other food provides the full amount.

Without manganese, the antioxidant mechanism of resveratrol would be minimal, if any. But, if you choose the best supplement, you can have it all. If you have two minutes to spare, please take a look at my website now.
